Data and Network Cabling on the Sunshine Coast

Reliable connections start with well-planned cabling. Dr Watt installs data, network, phone and TV cabling for homes and businesses across the Sunshine Coast, including home offices, smart TVs, Wi-Fi access points and business workstations. Lior is both a licensed electrician and a registered cabler, so power points and communications cabling can be planned and installed together. You deal directly with one tradesperson for the agreed electrical and cabling work.

Cabler Registration A009742 · QLD Electrical Contractor Licence 82601 · Residential and commercial

Why use a registered cabler

Fixed customer cabling connected, or intended to connect, to a telecommunications network must be installed by a suitably registered cabler or under appropriate supervision. An electrical licence alone does not cover this work. Dr Watt combines electrical work and communications cabling, making it easier to coordinate power and data during an installation, renovation or fit-out. Network equipment selection and configuration are agreed separately where required.

Data cabling we install

For homes

  • Cat6 data points for home offices, smart TVs, gaming setups and other fixed devices
  • cabling to Wi-Fi access point locations, to support better coverage where suitable equipment is installed and configured
  • internal data links between the router, home office, TV area and other rooms
  • customer-side phone and internet cabling alterations, subject to the existing connection type and equipment
  • TV points and coaxial cabling, with the scope confirmed before quoting
  • a central location for cabling and network equipment, using a cabinet or patch panel where appropriate

For businesses

  • network points for workstations, printers, IP phones and other connected equipment
  • communications cabinets and patch panels with labelled connections
  • cabling for point-of-sale equipment in shops and cafes
  • cabling to camera locations, with camera installation, commissioning and security system work excluded unless separately agreed and appropriately authorised
  • cabling to wireless access points and compatible Power over Ethernet devices, with equipment and power requirements confirmed during planning
  • fit-out cabling coordinated with the electrical work and other trades

We agree which items are included before starting: cabling, outlets, patch panels, cabinets, patch leads and any equipment installation or configuration. See our commercial electrician services.

Plan cabling early in a build or renovation

Involve your cabler before wall and ceiling finishes are completed. We discuss where you'll use computers, TVs and access points, where the router and cabinet should go, and any future connections worth allowing for. Installing cable or spare pathways while access is available can reduce disruption later. The practical options and cost depend on the building, cable routes and installation requirements. See our renovation electrical services.

How we run your cabling

  1. Plan the connections. We confirm the devices and locations you need to connect, the existing internet connection and a suitable place for the router or communications cabinet, with equipment space, ventilation, access and power considered together.
  2. Select and run the cable. We use suitable cable for the agreed application and route, with Cat6 a common choice for internal data points. The design considers run length, installation conditions and the separation required from electrical wiring. Any outdoor or between-building link needs its own assessment.
  3. Terminate and label. We terminate and label connections to suit the agreed layout, at wall outlets, a patch panel or another suitable termination arrangement.
  4. Test and hand over. We test the installed data links and explain the labelling and connection layout. The quote identifies the testing included, and performance certification and a formal test report are separate scope items where required. We provide the applicable cabling compliance documentation.

What affects data cabling costs

The price depends on the number and location of points, cable routes and lengths, access, wall construction, and any cabinet, patch panel or equipment work included. We provide a written quote for the agreed scope. Send your suburb, plans or photos, the number of points you're considering and where the router or existing cabinet is located.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cat6 cabling better than Wi-Fi?

A wired connection can provide a stable link for fixed devices and reduce reliance on wireless coverage. Actual performance depends on the devices, network equipment, installation and internet service. Cabling and Wi-Fi often work well together, especially when access points have wired connections.

Will data cabling make my internet faster?

It may improve the connection between your device and router if Wi-Fi is the bottleneck, but it does not increase the speed provided by your internet plan or fix an upstream network fault. We discuss what problem you're trying to solve before recommending cabling.

Can you move my NBN connection box?

Send a photo of the equipment and describe where you'd like the connection. Moving a router or extending customer-side data cabling is different from relocating NBN-owned equipment. Some in-building alterations may be carried out by an eligible registered cabler under NBN's Authority to Alter conditions, and other work needs NBN or your provider. We confirm the permitted scope before agreeing to the job.

Do you install and configure routers, Wi-Fi access points and cameras?

This page covers cabling. Equipment supply, installation, network configuration and camera system commissioning are included only where specifically agreed and within the appropriate authorisations. If another specialist is needed, we clarify the handover.

Can you install power and data in the same visit?

Yes, where the scope and access allow. Being both a licensed electrician and a registered cabler lets Lior coordinate the work. Power and data still require suitable routing and separation, so they are not simply run together.
