What to do if there is immediate danger
- Fire, smoke or immediate danger: move to safety and call Triple Zero (000). Do not approach a hot, damaged or sparking switchboard.
- Electric shocks or tingles: stay away from the appliance, tap or fitting, warn others and call Energex immediately on 13 19 62. Do not touch the switchboard or attempt to turn off the power.
- Fallen or low-hanging powerlines: stay at least 10 metres away, keep others clear and call 000 or Energex on 13 19 62. Treat all lines as live.
- Water near electrical fittings: keep out of the affected area. Do not touch wet fittings or approach a wet switchboard, and seek urgent assistance.
For electrical faults without immediate danger, call Dr Watt on 0410 699 352 to discuss the problem and check availability. If there is an urgent safety risk, do not wait for a callback.
Electrical faults we investigate and repair
- Complete or partial loss of power within your property
- Safety switches or circuit breakers that trip repeatedly or will not reset
- Faulty power points, switches and light fittings
- Flickering lights and intermittent electrical faults
- Storm damage or water-affected wiring and fittings, once safe access is established
- Electrical supply faults affecting equipment in shops, cafes, offices and other commercial premises
Where a fault involves the electricity network or metering, we explain which provider needs to be involved.
When to seek urgent help
Burning smells, sparking, unusual heat, repeated tripping or sudden changes in lighting need prompt assessment. Stop using the affected equipment and keep clear of damaged fittings. Follow the immediate danger advice above if there is smoke, fire, a shock or fallen powerlines.
A single power point or light that has stopped working may suit a booked repair, provided there are no other warning signs. If you are unsure, call to discuss what is happening.
Power out? Check this first
Only carry out these checks if there is no smoke, burning smell, sparking, water damage, shock or other sign of danger.
- Check whether neighbouring properties are also without power, and look at the Energex outage map. If an outage is listed, follow Energex's updates.
- If a safety switch has tripped, unplug appliances on the affected circuit where it is safe to do so, and try resetting it once. Switching appliances off at the wall alone may not be enough.
- If the switch will not reset, or trips again, leave it off and call a licensed electrician. Do not repeatedly reset it.
- A fault affecting only your property can still involve the electricity supply. Call to discuss the symptoms so the next step can be identified.
Read our guide on what to do when your safety switch keeps tripping.
What happens when you call
- Call Lior directly and describe the problem, including any tripping, noises, smells or recent storm damage.
- We discuss the situation and confirm whether attendance is available, together with the applicable call-out and labour charges.
- On arrival, we assess the fault and make the affected installation safe before carrying out repairs.
- Where practical, we repair the fault during the visit. If parts or further work are needed, we explain the options and discuss the cost before proceeding.
- If the repair cannot be completed during the visit, the affected circuit or equipment may need to remain disconnected until it can be repaired safely.
Urgent and after-hours call-out costs
Urgent and after-hours attendance may cost more than a scheduled weekday visit. We explain the applicable call-out fee and labour rates before arranging attendance. The total depends on the fault, the time needed to locate and repair it, and any parts required, and we discuss the scope and cost with you before any further work.
