Power point work we do

  • extra outlets for kitchens, bedrooms, living areas, home offices and workspaces
  • single-to-double replacements where the wiring, mounting and circuit are suitable
  • USB and USB-C outlets, with charging output and device compatibility considered before selection
  • suitable outdoor power points for decks, patios, entertaining areas and gardens
  • power for sheds, garages and workshops, with supply requirements and cable routes assessed
  • dedicated circuits and suitable connections for appliances and equipment where required, including ovens, cooktops, spas, pool pumps and workshop machinery
  • replacement of damaged or loose outlets, with investigation of overheating or other faults rather than simply changing the fitting
  • relocation of power points for TVs, cabinetry, furniture layouts and renovations

Some appliances require a fixed connection or a specialised outlet rather than a standard power point. Send the equipment specifications before purchasing or arranging installation.

More outlets do not mean more circuit capacity

Additional power points can make a room more practical and reduce reliance on extension leads. They do not increase the capacity of an existing circuit, and replacing a single outlet with a double does not double the available power. If several appliances need to run together, we assess their electrical requirements and the existing circuit before recommending extra outlets, a dedicated circuit or other work.

Avoid plugging power boards into other power boards or stacking adaptors. Do not exceed equipment ratings, and follow the appliance manufacturer's instructions, particularly for heaters and other high-load appliances.

A hot, discoloured, loose or buzzing outlet needs attention. It is not simply a sign that you need more sockets. Stop using the affected equipment, keep clear of damaged fittings and seek urgent electrical advice. For smoke, fire or immediate danger, move to safety and call 000.

Planning the installation properly

Circuit and load. We assess the existing circuit and intended equipment. Where a separate circuit or supply upgrade is needed, we explain why before including it in the scope.

Safety switch protection. We check the circuit protection and any changes needed for the proposed work. Adding an outlet to an existing circuit may also require safety switch protection to be upgraded. A full switchboard replacement is not automatically necessary.

Cable routes and access. Wall construction, roof and underfloor access, distance and obstructions affect the cable route. Longer runs to outbuildings need assessment of the supply, cable and installation conditions.

Outdoor suitability. We select an outlet and location to suit exposure, mounting and the way it will be used. Weatherproof ratings and cover arrangements must suit the actual conditions, including when plugs are connected, and coastal corrosion resistance is considered where relevant.

Useful placement. We discuss furniture, cabinetry and appliance positions before installation, including access to switches and plugs. Power points in kitchens, bathrooms and other wet areas need suitable positioning for the location. If switchboard work is needed, we explain the options. See our switchboard upgrade services.

What affects installation costs

  • whether a suitable existing circuit can be used or a new circuit is needed
  • wall construction, ceiling height and roof or underfloor access
  • cable lengths, outdoor work, trenching and outbuilding supplies
  • outlet type, USB charging specifications and specialised equipment connections
  • mounting arrangements, access openings, patching and finishing in the scope
  • any circuit protection, earthing or switchboard work
  • the number and locations of outlets and how efficiently the work can be combined

We provide a written quote for the agreed work. Combining several points in one visit may reduce repeat travel and setup, but the cost depends on each location and circuit, not just the number of outlets.

Frequently asked questions

Can you add a power point without cutting walls?

Sometimes. Existing roof or underfloor access and a clear wall cavity may allow a concealed cable route with only the opening for the outlet. Other installations need extra access openings or surface wiring. We discuss the practical route and clarify any patching or painting included before starting.

How many power points can go on one circuit?

There is no single number suitable for every installation. The circuit design, cable, protection, installation conditions and expected load all matter. We assess what you intend to use before recommending additional outlets or a new circuit.

Will replacing a single power point with a double let me run more appliances?

It gives you another place to plug in, but it does not increase the circuit's capacity. If the appliances draw too much power together, another outlet alone will not resolve the problem.

Can you install USB-C power points?

Yes. Charging output and supported charging protocols vary between models. Tell us which devices you want to charge so the fitting can be selected appropriately. A USB-C socket alone does not guarantee laptop charging or a particular fast-charging speed.

Can you add outdoor power or power to a shed?

Yes, subject to assessment. Tell us the distance, proposed equipment and whether a cable route or trench is available. We assess the electrical supply and agree the scope, including any trenching and reinstatement responsibilities.

Can I replace a power point myself?

No. Installing or replacing a fixed power point is electrical work and must be carried out by a licensed electrician. Dr Watt handles the agreed installation, electrical testing and required certification.

Need power where you actually use it? Send Lior your suburb, the number and proposed locations of outlets, and photos of the area. Tell us which appliances or equipment you plan to connect, especially for kitchens, workshops, outdoor areas and sheds.
